These are the beards we’re selling at TheSelfMadeMen.com’s online store! They came out GREAT!
The Self Made Men is an organization working to promote awareness of Trans* individuals in the Cisgendered culture, as well as encourage, mentor and support our fellow Transmen in our own. This year we will be designing and producing an annual calendar showcasing transitional pictures (The typical “before and after” type things) as well as a brief bio, and an inspirational quote of sorts. Our hope is that this calendar can be used as a tool to provide support for those going through less than easy transitions and to put faces to our cause that we control, rather than the media.
This is an example of what a Self Made Men canlendar page is going to look like. If this is something you feel you would be interested in participating in, please email us a ‘before’ and ‘after’ picture, as well as a full body image (so we can make one of those awesome little cartoons you see above) a brief bio and inspirational quote to help fellow tboys in times of need.

I had my first business meeting today
With my good friend, and locally deemed “Gay God” of Rochester, Mr David Yip. We talked over my business plan and I got him to raise his eyebrows and admit several of my points were very good ideas. He’s going to help me write grant letters and have a table and a place in the pride parade by next year. We’re setting goals and really really working with this and for the first time… Self Made Men is truly… possible. For example; We’re creating a folder of information directed toward health care providers about their transgender patients. Including a powerpoint and do-it-yourself lesson… So that either we would come in and teach them, or a member of their own staff could easily look at it and teach the course themselves. This is due to the fact that I don’t think trans people should have to teach a doctor about themselves, doctors should be up to date on everyone in their culture and be able to take care of their trans patients just as well.
I’ll be putting together a folder of transitional material for the rochester area. Full of papers such as, name change, dmv change, fee waivers, and resources. Pharmacies that carry hormones and prices. Health care providers that are certified resources for trans health.
Designing presentations aimed toward health care, legal, transitional and general audiences for next years trans panels.
Building the website to contain featured members, videos, inspirational pages, a shopping page full of tshirts, self made men calendars, key chains, and ways to show pride in being trans. Having our resources available online. Fun stuff and business stuff.
A lot more, I want this to have a magazine, and yearly calendar, I want to send out these postcards for T-Versaries, and really help us have a deeper sense of pride in ourselves and what we’re doing here.
Last post about Self Made Men for the day, promise! But this is the “Top reason to follow us on tumblr, and basically in life…” This is the trans gift wrap and the style that the T day and Operation and “Happy Transition” cards and accessories will kind of follow. I’m looking up custom wholesale type stuff. We’ll also be selling stp’s and trans starter sets. TheSelfMadeMen.tumblr.com

Another question from Allie : )
alliegeorge87: Why did you feel compelled to start TheSelfMadeMen (and when can we expect these super hot calendars)?
My buddy Jay and I always talk about how we wished we had (or knew) “big brothers” to help us transition. Jason didn’t have anyone to help him at all. I had done a ton of research before I started transitioning and once I met him he really helped with hormones at preparing myself (and people around me) for changes I should expect.
In that aspect he’s my “big brother” in that he experienced the things I was about to experience first and so he gave me an idea of what to expect so I wasn’t blind-sided.
From there, I had top surgery first and then a couple months later he had his. So in that aspect, I suppose I’m his big brother since I was able to kind of help him prepare for surgery and help him out afterwards.
For me, at least, the Self Made Men project is (mainly targeted toward transguys, we’re here for anyone) about getting the message out that:
- you have people that are here to help you
- you have resources for doctors, surgeons, etc
- you have people that care about you
- you have people that want to know how your transition is going
- you have people that will listen and give advice if you open up and ask
- you’re not alone
On top of that, my goal is to bring positive role models for transguys as well as to the general public. We can fight for rights and equality as much as we want, but positive depictions of trans people out in the world will always help. Jay and I are getting as involved as we can as advocates to educate the general public on issues that are vitally important for transfolk.
I feel like there’s more - Jay, do you have anything to add?
Self Made Men Calendars
We’re still accepting transition photos for the calendars. Hopefully they’ll be all done by the end of December. We’ll put up an order form on the Self Made Men tumblr shortly so we can get them to people at the beginning of the new year! : )
I do have a couple of things to add : D
Self Made Men for me, like Noah said, is a way to educate, promote awareness, and help as many people as we can with the knowledge and resources we have between us. Also, I think Noah said, is that we’re putting a positive face to the word Trans in the minds of those not in the GLBT community. We’re not saying we’re perfect, or we’re the ideal transition because we both struggle with dysphoria and our self image and everything that other Self Made Men do. I think that’s what makes us different… Is that we can admit those things, and be on the same level as the people we’re helping, not high above them. I remember when I was transitioning, I knew a couple of older tboys, and I felt like they wouldn’t be willing to talk to me. Or they would be condescending about my silly questions. We want that to be the furthest thing from what anyone feels like.
In our area, we’ve been asked to speak at trans panels because we fill a need. There aren’t many people in our age group, transitioning and willing to put ourselves out there about these issues but there are a lot of people who need to hear what we have to say.
I’m ranting? I think so haha.
Anyways… In short, I felt compelled to start Self Made Men with Noah because there was a need for us :o) I’m pretty sure both of us wish there were people like us there when we were younger.
